Jefferson County Inmate Records
The main current-custody source is the official Jefferson County Jail roster, operated through the Sheriff's Office Jail Division and linked from the county's Inmate Information and Roster page. The roster sends users to the Zuercher public portal for inmate booking information and charges. It is free to use in the public view inspected for the research file, and no account login was required to see the inmate table.
The roster is best for people held at Jefferson County Jail after a local arrest, warrant, probation matter, local sentence, or outside-agency hold. It is not a full criminal-history database. It also is not the official court docket. Court dates and filed charges belong in Indiana MyCase and Jefferson County court records, while sentenced state-prison custody belongs in the Indiana Department of Correction system.
The current roster API returned 145 total public records on June 12, 2026. Treat that as a point-in-time roster count, not an average daily population. The same inspection found that public rows include mugshots when available, name, race, sex, age, arrest date, and charge, warrant, hold, and bond text. Public rows did not show actual date of birth, booking number, housing unit, or court date.
The official Zuercher inmate roster is the most direct place to start a Jefferson County inmate lookup.
The screenshot shows why the roster works as a current jail table rather than a deep profile system: the public row and the charge line carry the usable record details.
Use Jefferson County Roster
A broad search works best at first. The name field is combined, so entering a last name is often safer than entering a full name with a middle initial or suffix. The roster sorts by name by default. It returns paged results, with the public app requesting up to 50 records at a time while still reporting the total count separately.
- Open the county inmate page and choose the link labeled Inmate Booking Information and Charges, or go straight to the Zuercher inmate route.
- Search by name first. If the name is common, add race, sex, arrest date, held-for agency, in-custody date, or release date.
- Use Search to run the query. Use Reset before starting a new search so an old date or agency filter does not hide the right person.
- Read both the main table row and the charge or hold text underneath it. Bond and warrant details may be embedded in that second line.
- If no match appears, check the custody path: IDOC for sentenced Indiana prison custody, BOP for sentenced federal custody, ICE ODLS for immigration detention, and Indiana VINE or SAVIN for notifications.
The roster can also be used with the In Custody On filter when someone may have been in the jail on a past date. The Release Date filter exists too. Because the county does not publish a retention period for released roster records, a missing result should not be treated as proof that no booking existed. For older or missing records, use the Sheriff's Office records route or the court and clerk route if the question is about a filed case.
Jefferson County Roster Fields
The Jefferson County roster exposes several public filters, but not every field in the vendor's generic template is actually configured as a Jefferson public search field. The Cell Block option exists in the underlying template and has many internal labels, including booking, medical housing, segregation, JCAP, and block names. For Jefferson's public roster configuration, the available public filters are name, race, sex, arrest date, held-for agency, in custody on, and release date.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name | Text | No stated requirement | Combined name search. A last name is usually the cleanest first query. |
| Race | Dropdown | Optional | Includes White, Black or African American, Asian, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and Unknown. |
| Sex | Dropdown | Optional | Female, Male, and Unknown are available public choices. |
| Arrest Date | Date | Optional | Date picker for narrowing records tied to a specific arrest date. |
| Held For Agency | Dropdown | Optional | Includes JCSO, Madison Police, Hanover Police, Indiana State Police, ICE-DHS, US Marshal, parole, courts, and other agencies. |
| In Custody On | Date | Optional | Date picker. Jefferson configuration did not set a public date limit in the inspected setup. |
| Release Date | Date | Optional | May help when looking for a person who is no longer in current custody. |
Do not search by booking number for Jefferson County unless another official record has given one to you and the roster interface later adds that field. The public Jefferson roster fields inspected for the research file did not expose booking number, court date, or housing unit in the public table.
Jefferson County Inmate Record Fields
A Jefferson County inmate record is compact. The roster row gives basic identity and arrest data, then the second row supplies the charge or hold text. That text may include a warrant label, statute or code, offense description, arrest date, bond type, bond amount, source such as judge or preset bond, warrant number, issuing jurisdiction, and out-of-state or federal hold language.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Mugshot | Current booking photo if available. A placeholder icon can appear when no public photo is attached. |
| Name | Last, first, and middle name style used by the roster table. |
| Race and sex | Public demographic categories from the jail roster configuration. |
| Age | Age only. The public Jefferson view does not show date of birth. |
| Arrest date | Date tied to the current custody event or listed hold line. |
| Charges and holds | Warrant, charge, statute/code, description, agency hold, bond terms, warrant number, and issuing jurisdiction when published. |
| Bond | May appear inside the charge or hold line, including Cash Only, Concurrent To, Set By Judge, or Set By Preset Bond. |
| Release date | Blank for current inmates, but the roster includes a release-date filter. |
Some terms need a plain-English read. A detainer is a request or hold from another agency. A cash-only bond means the full listed amount must be paid through an authorized channel. A no-bond hold means release is not available unless a court changes the order. A held-for-agency line can explain why paying a local bond may not end custody.
Note: Court dates are not shown in the Jefferson roster row; use Indiana MyCase or the local clerk for case events.
Jefferson County Jail Contacts
Jefferson County Jail is operated by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Jail Division. The Sheriff's Office administration number is useful for office and records questions during business hours, while Jail Control is the practical custody-status line. The county sheriff page lists Sheriff Ben Flint and the same main public-safety address used by the jail and communications center.

Administrative office: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
For public-record requests, the sheriff research notes point to Administrative Services as the office that supplies copies of reports when requested. Indiana APRA requests should identify the record with reasonable detail. For court documents, case filings, and hearing records, the record holder is the court or Jefferson County Clerk, not the jail.
Jefferson County Inmate Lookup Paths
People move between systems. A person arrested by the Sheriff's Office, Madison Police Department, Hanover Police Department, Indiana State Police, or another local agency may begin in the county jail. After conviction and transfer to a state prison, the county roster is no longer the right source. Federal and immigration holds have their own public lookup limits, even when Jefferson County Jail temporarily holds a person for another agency.
| Custody or Record Need | Where to Search | What It Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Current county jail custody | Jefferson Zuercher roster | Local jail records, charges, holds, bond text, age, mugshot when available. |
| Secondary county-jail path | Indiana County Jail Public Portal | Statewide county jail search fields for last name, first name, birth date, county, booking date, and release date. |
| Sentenced Indiana prison custody | IDOC incarcerated search | Name or DOC-number search for people in Indiana Department of Correction custody. |
| Victim custody notification | Indiana VINE or Indiana SAVIN | Custody and case notification search, including offender name, ID, or case number routes. |
| Federal sentenced custody | BOP inmate locator | Federal prison locator. No BOP facility was located in Jefferson County. |
| Immigration detention | ICE ODLS | Official ICE detainee search. Access to the page can be restricted by the site's edge controls. |
No dedicated Jefferson County, Indiana sheriff or major city police app with inmate roster or warrant lookup was located during research. Use the official roster, Jail Division phone, MyCase, IDOC, and VINE or SAVIN instead.
Jefferson County Booking Records
The county does not publish a full step-by-step booking manual, but the local sources show the main path. An arresting agency brings the person to Jefferson County Jail. Intake creates a public roster record when eligible for publication. Jail staff may classify the person for booking, general housing, medical housing, segregation, intoxication observation, inmate worker housing, JCAP, or another internal location, but the public Jefferson roster did not expose housing unit.
Medical care is part of the intake and jail-life record. The county inmate information page states that Quality Correctional Care provides medical services and that medical personnel are available around the clock. The jail also lists hygiene packs at booking, weekly indigent hygiene packs, and limits on property drop-offs. Only glasses and medication are allowed to be dropped off at the jail.
Bond details may appear in the roster hold line. Pre-initial-hearing and after-hours bond rules come from the official inmate information page. After an initial hearing, bond can be paid at the Jefferson County Clerk's Office, then the receipt must be brought back to the Jail Division for verification before release. Bond over $10,000 must be paid at the Clerk's Office. Because the local bond instructions contain both cash and debit or credit language for jail payments, confirm the payment method with Jail Control before traveling.
Jefferson County Inmate Visits
Visitation is video-based and appointment-based. The county visitation rules say visits are scheduled online or at the kiosk only, unless telephone scheduling has been preapproved by the Jail Commander. On-site visitors must provide identification before the visit begins. No recording devices or cell phones are allowed in the visitation room, and recording or photographing inmates can end the visit and suspend privileges.

The county's inmate information page also links jail services such as commissary, bond, mail, medical care, and program rules.
That county page is useful because Jefferson separates the jail's physical address from the inmate mail address and lists practical restrictions that do not appear in the roster table.
Jefferson County Inmate Mail
Mail for Jefferson County Jail uses the address published on the inmate information page, not the physical jail address. Address letters to the inmate's first and last name, C/O Jefferson County Jail, 317 Walnut Street, Madison, IN 47250. The sender must include a full first and last name with return address in the upper left corner. Mail with no return address can be placed in inmate property until release.
Do not send cash, checks, money orders, or other payments through the mail. The county also bars stickers, glitter, Polaroid photographs, pornographic photos, cards, and coloring pages. Legal mail is treated differently from ordinary inspected mail. Staff do not pass messages to inmates except emergencies approved by the Jail Commander, so ordinary communication must use scheduled visits, collect calls started by the inmate, or U.S. mail.
